You will receive a seed packet containing 1 gram or a minimum of 100 fresh Staghorn sumac seeds. Rhus typhina, also known as Staghorn Sumac, Green-flowered Sumach, Velvet Sumac, and Stag’s Horn Sumach is a member of the Anacardiaceae family related to cashews, mangos, and pistachios. This small tree-like shrub is native to Eastern North America and gets its name from the small hair-like filaments that cover its branches resembling the texture of deer antlers in velvet. Staghorn Sumac blooms in spring and produces clusters of green-yellowish-colored flowers that attract many pollinators including bees and butterflies. As the flowers develop into large clusters of small berries other wildlife such as birds and small mammals are fond of eating these maroon-colored treats. Staghorn Horn berries have a sour tart flavor that people enjoy as well. Commonly made into tinctures, spice blends, and syrups. Sumac is used to create a drink similar to lemonade called Sumac-ade; a refreshing unique drink perfect for summer! Growing this plant from seed is easy and once established is drought tolerant making it a fantastic addition to your yard or outdoor space!
