While I was apprenticing with Marion Harless, an herbarist living in Kerens, West Virginia, Marion and I visited Kaila at the Sites Homestead garden at Seneca Rocks. Kaila keeps the place looking beautiful and full of period-specific plants. She has several heirloom beans including chipmunk beans, fat man beans and noble beans gracing her primitive bean trellises. Among many many other herbs she has clary sage, costmary, rue and betony. I was particularly delighted with the costmary as I read once that its leaves make excellent, sweetly scented bookmarks.
