Tanacetum vulgare, also known as Tansy, Common Tansy, Bitter Buttons, Garden Tansy, and Golden Buttons is a member of the Asteraceae family native to Europe and Asia. Brought to the U.S. by European settlers in the 1600’s Tansy was grown in home gardens to be used as medicine. Tansy has since naturalized in most parts of the world and can be found growing wild in old fields, riverbanks, and sand dunes. This multipurpose flower is still used in folk medicine, and as a natural dye for textiles! The sunny yellow flowers are an excellent companion plant for your vegetable garden. If supporting local pollinators is your goal, plating tansy will attract many species including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds! Tansy requires little maintenance and will re-seed itself allowing you to enjoy all it has to offer for years to come!
