- Description
You will receive a seed packet containing 10 grams or a minimum of 5 fresh Paw Paw seeds. Asimina Triloba, also known as Paw Paw, Indiana Banana, Hoosier Banana, or Poor Man's Banana is a small understory tree in the Annonaceae family. This North American native develops small oblong fruit that is similar in flavor to banana mixed with citrus. This unique fruit starts to develop in late summer and becomes ripe in September and October. At least two Paw Paw trees are required to cross-pollenate in order to achieve fruit. The shelf-life of a tree-ripened fruit stored at room temperature is 2 to 3 days, but fruit can be held up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator. Paw Paw trees and their delicious fruit have been enjoyed by indigenous people as well as other settlers of North America for hundreds of years. Journal entries from the famous explorers Lewis and Clark reveal they considered the fruit of the Paw Paw tree to be a tasty treat. Pawpaw flourish in rich fertile soils where they grow undisturbed by deer who find their leaves unappealing. Planting these trees is an easy way to help support your local ecosystem while growing your own fruit!
