Welcome to Smoke Camp Crafts—where Appalachian heritage meets natural living and where every seed, jar, and potted plant tells a story rooted in biodiversity, community, and resilience. For nearly five decades, our work has honored the land, celebrated botanical wisdom, and fostered connection through heirloom seeds, dried herbs, teas, jams & jellies, and a robust lineup of medicinal potted plants.
Founded in 1978 by Dot Montgillion, Smoke Camp Crafts began as a humble homestead operation on the winding backroads of Weston, West Virginia. Dot and her husband Bob left behind their USDA posts in Beltsville, Maryland, trading in lab coats for garden gloves and academic theories for hands-in-the-soil experience. What they cultivated on Smoke Camp Run Road would become the foundation of our work today—an enduring love for the land, a reverence for traditional herbalism, and a commitment to empowering others to grow, create, and live naturally.
Dot’s journey began in the USDA’s phytochemical research programs, working alongside renowned herbalist Dr. James Duke. Immersed in studies on the medicinal uses of plants and the chemical profiles of herbs, Dot developed a passion that could no longer be contained by sterile lab environments. When she moved to West Virginia in 1975, she brought her expertise with her—and paired it with the ancient folk knowledge of her Appalachian neighbors.
Out of her 1800s-era log cabin on Smoke Camp Road, Dot launched a business offering teas, culinary blends, body products, and her now-famous “Road Kill Jam,” made with apples, raspberries, and local black walnuts. Equal parts humor and heart, that jam became a symbol of Smoke Camp’s identity—deeply local, joyfully handmade, and undeniably rooted in the bounty of the land.
Specializing in medicinal herb plants, perennial edibles, and native pollinator plants, we produce plants for your home garden and for commercial plantings. Call us for wholesale pricing on our plants.
Today, Smoke Camp Crafts continues Dot’s mission with a wide range of herbal products and garden essentials, each one crafted with the same attention to detail and care that she brought to her earliest formulations.
We specialize in:
Heirloom Seeds – open-pollinated and genetically diverse, our garden seeds are preserved for flavor, resilience, and tradition. From chamomile and echinacea to yarrow, these seeds are more than just planting material—they’re living heritage.
Potted Plants – organically grown and tailored for home gardens, farms, and commercial installations. Whether you're building a pollinator garden, a kitchen herb bed, or a medicinal plot, our potted plants provide strong starts for your growing journey.
Jams & Jellies – made with local fruits and Dot’s original recipes, each jar is a spoonful of Appalachia. These aren’t your average preserves; they’re rich with story, rooted in place, and made with love.
Culinary Blends & Teas – formulated using herbs grown and harvested by our team, these blends highlight the connection between flavor and well-being.
We grow what we sell. Many of our garden seeds are collected right here on Smoke Camp land, and our potted plants are carefully propagated using organic soil, regenerative practices, and a deep respect for the ecosystems they emerge from.
We’re not just a business—we're a living tribute to the idea that knowledge should be shared and nature should be nurtured. Smoke Camp Crafts serves as a platform focused on preserving biodiversity and empowering local growers.
Some of our ongoing community initiatives include:
Pay-What-You-Can Farm Stand – stocked with heirloom seeds, potted plants, fresh produce, and dried herbs to help new and experienced growers access what they need.
Urban Botanical Garden & Herb Library – created to inspire the next generation of herbalists, gardeners, and plant lovers through free and accessible education.
Local Wild Herb Purchasing – each season, we purchase dandelions, violet leaves, goldenrod, and other foraged herbs from local harvesters to support their efforts and sustain the demand for native medicine.
Full-Time Farm Employment – our crew of six full-time employees tends to the fields, propagates our potted plants, and manages seed saving, all while learning the ins and outs of herbal farming from the ground up.
The principles Dot instilled in Smoke Camp Crafts continue to guide every decision we make—from the products we launch to the people we hire and the partnerships we foster.
Here’s how our core values shape our daily work:
Every heirloom seed we save and every potted plant we grow carries the responsibility of land care. We don’t use synthetic pesticides and instead nurture soil health, interplant with pollinators, and rotate crops to promote ecological balance. Our approach is rooted in permaculture principles and regenerative practices that restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and ensure the land thrives for generations to come.
Whether it’s recreating a tea blend from Dot’s original notes or designing seed packets using her botanical sketches, we preserve the wisdom and beauty that defines our Appalachian roots.
Our farm stand’s pay-what-you-can model, along with wholesale discounts for community gardens and educational farms, ensures that cost is never a barrier to participation in natural living.
New employees are immersed in herbal identification, seed saving, and garden planning as part of their onboarding. We also offer workshops to community members, covering everything from how to use culinary herbs to how to propagate native plants from seed.
We don’t just sell to customers—we collaborate with them. Many of the plants we grow and herbs we process come from small growers and foragers in our region, who earn income while contributing to a regional seed and herbal economy.
When you open a jar of our raspberry or rose petal jelly or plant one of our medicinal herb potted plants in your garden, you become part of a larger ecosystem—of soil and seed, of tradition and community. Each of our products is a reflection of nearly 50 years of work that started with a dream and a dirt path at the end of Smoke Camp Run Road.
Today, that dream lives on in our growing network of growers, harvesters, herbalists, and everyday people who believe in the power of plants. Whether you're starting a medicinal garden with our heirloom seeds, restocking your pantry with jams & jellies, or simply enjoying a cup of our calming herbal tea, you’re supporting a movement built on respect—for the earth, for tradition, and for each other.
We invite you to explore the full line of offerings from Smoke Camp Crafts and discover the joy of growing, making, and sharing. From seed to jar—then and now—we're proud to carry on Dot’s legacy and help others reconnect with the land, one potted plant or jelly jar at a time.
