This plant is a biennial, forming a rosette of leaves in its first year and producing pale pinkish flowers in its second year, though it may be coaxed into another year or two of blooming if its flowers are removed before it can set seed. Its foliage and flowers are fragrant and perfect for cosmetics, potpourris, teas, and more. Clary sage favors moist, light, well-drained soils, but is intolerant of heat and humidity. Reaches heights of 3-4 feet and spreads 2-3 feet. Tolerant of drought, resistant to deer. If allowed to set seed, it may spread aggressively. Per the Missouri Botanical Garden, "It is currently listed as a Class A Noxious Weed in the State of Washington where it has been found to invade pastures, meadows and rangeland resulting in displacement of native plants.".
